The Old Fashioned has survived Prohibition, disco, and approximately ten thousand variations because its formula is bulletproof: spirit, sugar, bitters, ice. But that doesn't mean we can't mess with it a little.
This version swaps simple syrup for demerara's molasses richness and brings in Amaro Montenegro, which adds this gorgeous honeyed bitterness that makes the whole thing feel more grown-up. The rye's spice gets amplified by both the amaro's herbal backbone and those reliable Angostura bitters. If you're feeling fancy, smoke the glass with applewood before you build it. That optional step adds a campfire quality that plays beautifully with the whiskey's oak notes without being gimmicky.
It's the kind of drink that makes sense when you want something serious but not stuffy. Pour one on a cold evening when you're settling into the couch with a good book, or serve it to friends who think they don't like whiskey. The amaro softens the edges just enough to win converts.

Note: Modern take on the classic Old Fashioned. Amaro Montenegro adds honeyed herbal complexity and bitter depth. Demerara syrup provides richer molasses-tinged sweetness. Dual citrus expression (lemon + orange) creates layered aromatics. Optional: smoke the glass with applewood for 5 seconds before building for contemporary presentation that complements the oak and spice notes.
